Data Analytics and Business Postgraduate Diploma

Successful data driven businesses in today’s digital economy need leaders at all levels who can combine advanced skills in data analytics with a strategic understanding of business.

The Level 7 Diploma in Data Analytics and Business will start you from the fundamentals of Python programming and exploratory data analysis. And from there, give you an understanding of statistical inference, predictive modelling, machine learning and artificial intelligence for business. In addition, this diploma will develop your knowledge of business and your leadership skills to provide you with a unique combination of managerial competencies of high value to a wide range of organisations.

Course Units

In the first part of this unit you will gain a strong understanding of the basics of Python programming for data science and analytics. This includes Python commands and packages for data management, descriptive statistics and data visualisation that will serve as the foundation for more advanced data analytics. Most analytics start with this type of exploratory data analysis and will enable you to perform essential data health checks and provide initial business insights.

In the second part, you will gain an understanding of statistical distribution and hypothesis testing. You will also cover parametric and non-parametric tests used in research problems and learn to formulate research hypotheses, select appropriate tests and write python programs to perform hypothesis testing, drawing inferences from the output generated.

In this unit you will firstly build a strong foundation for predictive modelling, defining the entire modelling process with the help of real-life case studies. Many concepts in predictive modelling methods are common in data analytics and we discuss these in detail. You will then learn to develop detailed models for categorical, multinomial and ordinal scaled variables, which are encountered in domains such as risk management, investment and financial decision making. Finally, you will use time series forecasting methods to analyse and forecast variables including GDP, inflation and stock market indices such as the Dow Jones and Hang Seng Index.

Data reduction is a key process in data analytics projects and in this unit you will cover data reduction methods such as principal component analysis, factor analysis and multidimensional scaling and learn to form segments using cluster analysis methods. Forming segments and then analyzing them is a key technique in big data analytics and the intrinsic information in large data sets comes out in detail once they are segmented thoughtfully.

In the second part of the unit you will work with machine learning algorithms in conjunction with classical predictive modelling methods. You will also learn to analyse structured and unstructured data from various sources including social media using text mining techniques to uncover market sentiment. You will also reinforce your understanding of artificial intelligence and big data within business contexts, as well as work with SQL and use data wrangling techniques.

Technology and the increasing power of data present opportunities and challenges to business organisations in today’s digital economy. Both traditional organisations and rapidly growing new entrants need to adapt in a rapidly changing business environment. This requires a flexible approach to both leadership and management and this unit will provide you with an understanding of classic and contemporary theories of leadership and change management, looking at these from strategic, group and personal perspectives.

This unit introduces fundamental finance and accounting concepts, discusses sources of finance and funding for organisations and challenges you to assess the importance of finance and accounting policies and practices on strategy and innovation. You will also cover key aspects of corporate reporting and discuss the impact of new technology and the role of big data on financial performance.

The strategic management unit enables you to gain an in-depth understanding of strategic management and business planning, and of the tools for reviewing current organisational strategies, with particular emphasis on the role and impact of digital technology and big data analytics on business models and the operating architectures of businesses. You will develop your knowledge of classical and contemporary concepts and frameworks to develop effective approaches to strategy that are particularly relevant to modern business organisations.
